Adam Macias has been thrown a few curve balls in his life, but losing his VA grant because his car broke down and missing a class was the one that struck him out. One relative away from homelessness, he has taking the bus to Sacramento, where his cousin has offered a house-sitting job and a new start. He has one goal, and that's to get his life back on track. Friends, pets, lovers need not apply.
Finn Stewart takes one look at Adam as he's applying to Candy Heaven and decides he's much too fascinating to leave alone. Finn is bright and shiny - and has never been hurt. Adam is wary of his attention from the very beginning - Finn is dangerous to every sort of peace Adam is forging, and Adam may just be too damaged to let him in at all.
But Finn is tenacious, and Adam's new boss, Darrin, doesn't take bullshit for an answer. Adam is going to have to ask himself which is harder - letting Finn in or living without him? With the holidays approaching, it seems like an easy question, but Adam knows from experience that life is seldom simple. And the world seldom cooperates with hope, faith, or the plans of cats and men.

I’m not even sure where to start. The story began with Darrin working his magic candy mojo, which I loved BTW… This may not have been a PNR, but the hint of magic that started the story was definitely enough to catch my interest. Of course, once Adam was introduced, magic or no, I was hooked. I loved both Adam and Finn from the start.Adam was… well… he was broken. My ‘Mama Bear’ gene worked over time when it came to him. There’s no excuse for what he went through. None. I felt exactly like Finn did when he discovered Adam’s troubled past… which BTW made me love Finn even more.
Can I just say, thank God for Finn’s determination. If not for his tenacity, he wouldn’t have stood a chance. That was just one of the many things that I adored about Finn.
Then there were the supporting characters…and there were many, not the least of which included Gonzo the cat and Clopper the dog. All of them played an important role and there wasn’t one that was introduced that I didn’t fall in love with. Of course there were the employees at the candy shop, but there was also Rico. The only interaction that Adam had with his cousin Rico was through text messages, but it was enough to be totally invested in his story, which is next. There was also Finn’s family, who totally made up for Adam’s poor excuse for a family… almost.
And did I mention the tears? Yeah, there were more than a few. There was one scene in particular that I pretty much dare anyone not to get just a little choked up while reading, but I found myself wiping my eyes more than once. *sigh* Bitter Taffy is next and it thankfully features Rico. I can’t wait to get to know Adam’s only sane family member ;)

Candy Man (Audible Audio Edition) Amy Lane Philip Alces Dreamspinner Press LLC Books Reviews
What can I say.. this is a fairly typical Amy Lane story. Amy Lane sells her characters. In this case as always it's easy to fall in love with them. It's easy to enjoy their pain, laugh at their antics, and enjoy their love. The Candy store in Old Town Sacramento is an amusing place to set the story, I've been in old town although not this store so I have an idea for the setup. It's a sweet love story who's main angst is overcoming old wounds. She clearly loves the Sacramento area and writes it well. She crafts a good story, writes cleanly and leaves you yearning for more.
But as with every other Amy Lane story while there is much about the story I love I can't give any of them 4 starts since there are parts that drive me nuts. This may come from the fact that I know California fairly well. (I find it's easier to believe in a world, when you don't live in it.) It continually frustrates me that Amy Lane has no idea how to apply and get into California Sate colleges for example. And I find myself going...No, No.. he is WAY to late to apply for Spring Semester at Sac State, and even a bit too late for the following fall. Ironically, I'll buy into the magic that the store owner can see the future in pixy sticks.
Really loved this story. First, when you have a vet in a gay romance, it's almost always about the trauma of it. Nope. I mean, it plays into it, but as always, this is all about the two main characters.
Who, by the way, are fantastic. Firstly, personalities of their own. And, in Adam's case, fears. And dreams. The supporting characters are also engaging in their own right.
Nine of the dialogue feels forced or scripted to some planned goal. It feels natural when you read it. Which is one of Amy Lake's strengths as an author.
Another strength is that she tells more with less words and that's pretty awesome.
When Amy Lane writes, she sometimes gives her readers something very special!!!
We who love her writing get to understand her, except when we are plunged into the abyss of darkness, despair, pain and angst. We grope for tissues first and the drink of choice which we have share of is usually alcoholic… But when she writes a sweet one… Boy is it sweet and gentle and the best!!!
The prologue to her story is stopping into a candy store with her family. Let me tell you, Amy’s imagination is always working, and this candy story, with the sweet owner…is the beginning of this series... Thank you Candy store Man for this sweetness.
Adam Macias was a throw away by his family. Treated terribly by his mother and grandmother, the only place he could go was into the service, only to see those horrors. The only person he could always count on was his cousin Rico, who had an apartment, a dog and a cat that needed tending while he went to NY for his job.
When Adam's car broke down, he bought a bus ticket, found his key under the mat at his cousin's and penniless, needed to find a job quick. We see Darrin the owner of Candy Heaven make mojo the candy from a Pixy Stix, and as if by that magic sees Adam coming into their store and lives. Finn Stewart works as the delivery runner for his father’s sandwich shop… It won’t be long now before Finn and Adam’s lives will collide…
Amy, thank you so much for such a sweet story. Life has hills and valleys, but we were never worried about Finn and Adam, just waited for it to all happen…
The past Adam had to suffer, made his having a Finn in his life so satisfying… A great read.
